Abstract Introduction Research and guidance materials addressing on-call work typically focus on a narrow set of industries (e.g., emergency services, healthcare). However, modern working arrangements are changing. The casualisation many industries, combined with the rise in online app-based arrangements, means that workers who can be called to not included current literature. We therefore present proposed taxonomy for classifying broader range workers, based sociodemographic characteristics Australia. Methods Work factors 1057 Australian adults were assessed survey. Questions addressed undertaken previous three months, occupation, hours, any non-standard conditions. Results At least one workday characterised as ‘on-call’ was reported by 45.5% respondents, higher prevalence younger individuals (63.1% respondents aged 18–24 years on-call). On-call including management, community personal service sales machinery operators, drivers. Discussion Findings suggest reports (typically traditional such services) likely underestimate proportion consider themselves workers. As result, requires novel classification system is able capture non-traditional differentiate between types arrangements. A work, gig economy relief, or unscheduled out hours presented.
